The victory of a Wirral cricket team will be celebrated this bank holiday weekend.

Caldy Cricket Club will be marking the match which saw them win their first national village cup at Lords in 1996.

A ‘festival of cricket’ will be held on Sunday August 28, where the club will welcome everyone from the local community together with the team which won the cup.

Some of the previous players will be returning to Wirral from as far as New Zealand and Australia.

David Brown, from Caldy Cricket club, said: “This is the first time we have got them back together, so it is really exciting for us.

“The day will be marking 20 years since their famous win.

“The celebrations are being run as an ‘ECB Club Open Day’ so anybody from the local community can come along and join in with the day not just club members.”

Several matches will be played, starting with an inter club junior game in the morning and an exhibition match in the afternoon which will see past players taking part.

The event starts at 10am and will run throughout the afternoon.
