Formby have signed Ajmal Shahzad, for the remainder of the season.

The 31-year-old former Lancashire seam bowler, who has also played for Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire, was released by Sussex on Tuesday morning and the Cricket Path skipper, Ian Cockbain, has acted quickly to strengthen his squad.

Formby currently lie 11th out of the 12 teams in the ECB Premier League and are one of three teams covered by nine points at the bottom of the table. Providing all the paperwork is completed, Shahzad’s first game for Formby will be at home to New Brighton on Saturday.

“We picked the news up on Tuesday and I immediately rang Stephen Parry because he had played with him at Lancashire,” said Cockbain. “He said Ajmal was a good lad who would fit in straightaway. I rang him up immediately and he was up for it. He also knows Haseeb Hameed and Gary Keedy and he likes the Liverpool Competition. He thinks it’s a good standard of cricket.
