WEEK 22: STILL ALL TO PLAY FOR IN DIVISION 1 AND THE TOP OF DIVISION 2.

Leigh to receive the John Tristram Trophy

Week 22 is the final week of a 2016 season which, with the exception of jockeying for Lancashire Cup Knock out places, sees everything done and dusted in the Premier Division but, as in previous years, there is still a lot to play for in Divisions 1 and 2.

While Leigh are receiving the John Tristram Trophy and the L&DCC Pennant at the Jubilee Recreation Ground, Rainford, eight Division 1 teams will be doing battle from as far as Prestatyn to Southport to decide where they will be playing their cricket in 2017.

Ainsdale, already assured of promotion, travel to the Welsh seaside resort needing just one point to go up as champions. They will however, find a Beech Close side fighting to stay up being eight points above bottom side Maghull but only one point behind Highfield. The Wigan outfit host Northop Hall and with Maghull visiting Burscough, whose promotion bid has wained in the last few weeks, any two of the three could be for the drop.

At the other end of the table Southport and Birkdale are in pole position to join neighbours Ainsdale in the top flight, knowing that any sort of win at home to Newton Le Willows will take them up. Newton are one of three clubs all on 257 points with an outside chance of promotion and a  maximum 25 pointer for them, Fleetwood Hesketh or Wigan together with a shocker from the Trafalgar Rd boys could do the trick. Wigan visit Orrell but Fleetwood Hesketh host Sefton Park, the club who, if they were to win at Sea Cop, are the most likely to benefit from any S&B slip up.

Meanwhile whilst Skelmersdale are being presented with the Division 2 Trophy at Wavertree, St Helens Town, Hightown St Mary’s and Spring View all have eyes on the second promotion spot. The Ruskin Drive club are eight points clear and travel to Caldy knowing that a win will take them up. Hightown St Mary’s late charge has put them in a position to challenge and they play in the splendid surroundings of Liverpool Cricket Club. Spring View have an outside chance and will be doing everything they can to achieve a big win against Old Xaverians should both their rivals slip up.
