Tatenda Taibu heading for Sandy Lane

The former Zimbabwe Test skipper Tatenda Taibu will be playing for Hightown St Mary’s in the MI Dental Liverpool Competition this season. The club announced the signing this weekend and, once the appropriate registration process has been completed, Taibu should make his debut at home to Alder next Saturday.

Even for a club renowned for its enterprise in recruiting overseas players, the capture of 32-year-old Taibu is a notable coup for Hightown St Mary’s, but the rather surprising aspect of the affair is that the player initially approached the club over Christmas and expressed a wish to play some cricket.

“We put a couple of messages on notice-boards saying we were looking for young players and Tatenda replied, saying that he was not a young player but an international  cricketer who retired a few years ago,” said Nick Gordon, the Hightown official responsible for arranging Taibu’s summer in Blundellsands. “He said he was looking to get back into the game and that he’d be interested in talking to us. We just didn’t expect to get a response from a former Test captain and I needed to check that it was actually him.”

It is hardly surprising that Hightown suspected they might have been the victims of a festive hoax. Wicketkeeper-batsman Taibu was the youngest captain in Test history when appointed at the age of 20 in 2004 and he eventually played 28 five-day matches and 150 one-day internationals for his country before retiring in 2012. He has one Test century and a dozen fifties to his credit and when Sri Lanka piled up 713 for four against Zimbabwe in 2004, Taibu conceded not a single bye.

“Since our first contact with Tatenda we have built up a rapport and we are happy to help him come over here to play some cricket,” said Gordon. “We told him we were a small club and that we were trying to rebuild. We also said that we’d love to have him along and tap into his experience. He was sold on the idea and we are really looking forward to having him over here.”
