Bootle and New Brighton go for County success whilst Colwyn Bay and Ormskirk battle for Digman

Firwood Bootle and New Brighton have the chance to complete the second and third legs of what would be an unprecedented grand slam of trophies for clubs in the Med Imaging Liverpool Competition this weekend.

Last week Colwyn Bay won the Welsh Cup when they beat Ammanford by six wickets. On Sunday New Brighton can put the Cheshire Cup in their trophy cabinet if they can overcome Chester Boughton Hall at Rake Lane. At roughly the same time Bootle will be attempting to win the Lancashire Cup when they take on Littleborough at Stanley Park, Blackpool.

And all this is followed a fortnight on Sunday by the biggest match which any team from Merseyside has played: the Royal London Club Championship Final at Beckenham when Northern will attempt to win a trophy which has always eluded Liverpool Competition sides.

It is a delicious prospect but it is no slight to any of the teams involved to say that the odds are probably against a Competition clean sweep. Nevertheless, it is a heck of an achievement even to get the opportunity to win four such prestigious trophies and it would be nice to think that members of other clubs in the area might suspend their usual loyalties in order to give the local sides their support.

The Cheshire Cup final begins at 12.30 and the Lancashire Cup final commences at 11.00.  While they are being contested, Colwyn Bay will be hoping to add another piece of silverware at the end of what has been a wonderful season for them when they entertain Ormskirk in the final of Ray Digman Trophy at Penrhyn Avenue.

Yet the quest for knockout glory in limited-over competitions is only one aspect of what promises to be a typically exciting conclusion to the 2015 campaign. Many teams - including some of those who are involved in finals - would argue that it is by league positions that a season should be judged.

So New Brighton’s exertions on Sunday may complete an excellent weekend in which they will become champions of the Liverpool Competition if they defeat Leigh at Beech Walk on Saturday. In the First Division, Sion Morris’s impressive Colwyn Bay side have already won the title and are therefore going in search of a third trophy on Sunday.

Behind them, Rainford and Maghull lead the chase for the second promotion place although neither Northop Hall nor Newton-le-Willows are out of the hunt, especially as the second and third-placed sides meet teams in  fourth and fifth positions tomorrow.

Nor is there likely to be any lack of tension in the Second Division where leaders Burscough need 12 points to secure promotion and 15  for the title. Rob Glaysher’s team host second-placed Old Xaverians tomorrow but Old Xavs are only one of five teams covered by just 12 points who are realistically chasing one promotion place. The other sides are Wavertree, Orrell Red Triangle, Spring View and Alder.

For those sides, as for many others in the Competition, the end of the cricket season is likely to be a nerve-wracking if exhilarating affair.
