....."looks to be a very powerful first-team squad."

The most hectic close season in the recent history of Southport and Birkdale CC has ended with the signings of opening batsmen Guy Edwards and Jibran Khan.

The recruitment of Edwards was expected. The former Hightown cricketer has opted to follow his team-mates Ian Sutcliffe, Adam Phillips and Andy Warhurst in making the short journey to Trafalgar Road.

By contrast, the arrival of 29-year-old Sussex-born Khan at S&B came, in the words of skipper Chris Firth, “completely out of the blue” with the player turning up at Trafalgar Road recently and wondering if he could play a bit of cricket for the club.

Unsurprisingly, Firth’s answer was very much in the affirmative. Khan has played ten first-class games for Pakistan Customs and has experience with Northants, Worcestershire and Kent Second XIs. He has also played Premier League cricket for Sussex club side Three Bridges, who used to be regular tourists to Merseyside.

“He looks a really good player,” said Firth. “We thought we had done all our business but Jibran will be a very useful addition to what already looks to be a very powerful first-team squad,”
