Club's 90th Anniversary set to be celebrated in style

The recent history of the Med Imaging Liverpool Competition has shown that relegation can affect a club in ways that extend far beyond a single season’s disappointment. Some stories, sadly, have been rather grisly. But perhaps it was to be expected that so dynamic and progressive a club as Highfield would respond to their relegation from the ECB Premier League last September in a positive fashion, and the early signs are that such optimism is justified.

Recently the Billinge Road outfit confirmed the engagement of Jahangir Mirza as overseas professional for 2014 and the club has a number of events planned to mark its 90th anniversary.
Jahangir, aged 26, boasts an impressive CV. He represented Pakistan at Under 19 level, helping them to beat the West Indies in the final of the ICC Under 19 World Cup in 2004, before establishing himself in the Lahore state team where he is currently captain. A genuine all-rounder, with first-class average of 31, Jahangir is also a regular off-spin bowler in all forms of the game and played club cricket in Yorkshire seven years ago.

Highfield chairman, Gary Speakman, commented. "Andrea Agathangelou was a great guy to have around the first team over the last couple of years, but his Lancashire commitments made it difficult for him to get involved midweek in the wider aspects of the club, in particular our excellent junior set up.

“We have therefore decided this year to revert to an overseas professional who will be focused fully on our club for the summer. Jahangir looks to fit the bill well and adds options and strength to Mike Farrell’s squad.

“But 2014 is also the 90th anniversary of the founding of the Highfield Cricket Club as we know it and we have a full programme of events designed to celebrate that anniversary, including a dinner featuring Geoff Miller on March 21st. Once the fixtures are confirmed we also plan to have a re-union of former players on a match day and a Family Fun Day for our hugely supportive community. Our senior and junior squads are looking like they will be once again be very competitive so it would be nice to celebrate some success on the field too in this special year.

I’d also like to send my best wishes for 2014 to all who are involved in, and support cricket throughout our senior and junior leagues."

Highfield’s reappointed first team captain Mike Farrell also warmly greeted the news of Jahangir’s signing.

"Jahangir is a high-quality and experienced player who will strengthen our batting order and also offer options with the ball,” he said. “He is currently enjoying a successful season particularly with the bat, scoring two centuries in recent weeks. He isn’t a prolific wicket taker in first-class cricket but he bowls a lot of overs and should provide us with a degree of control when needed, complementing our existing bowling attack.

“Our largely home grown squad for the coming season is looking in good shape, but Steve Peet has retired and Hedley Molyneux has joined Leigh, so we do remain interested in adding players who believe they could offer something to the first or second team and who buy into the club’s philosophy and close team spirit.

"Despite our relegation from the Premier League by just three points last season, Highfield remains a great club with an excellent ground, facilities and a conveyor belt of impressive young talent. I'm very proud to be leading my club once again during our 90th anniversary season. Our nets start at Robin Park on Monday 13thJanuary, so let’s see all those looking to be involved in senior cricket next season, down there between 8pm and 9pm."
