The Liverpool Gin Liverpool and District Cricket Competition celebrated the team and individual achievements and successes of the 2018 Season at its End of Season Meeting at Sefton Park Cricket Club on Tuesday night (16 October)

Then in a change from the usual format, the Management Committee, having experienced a significantly heavier than usual workload in 2018 and having been called upon to intervene in a  number of difficult and prolonged issues told the meeting that a change in the Management Structure was needed to keep pace with the demands of modern day Premier League Cricket.  

When the Liverpool Competition received ECB Premier League status in 2000 there were 25 clubs playing in 8 divisions. In 2018 the League has 41 clubs playing in 12 divisions, a new Junior League and a Feeder League. In the ensuing 18 years, both the League and the game of cricket have changed, but the structure to manage the League has not.   

Club representatives were shown draft proposals of a new structure featuring a strengthened Management Committee supported by a series of Sub-Committees dealing with 2ND and 3rd X1 Cricket, Junior Cricket, Women’s and Girls Cricket, Club and Ground Matters and Cup Competitions.

A Management Committee statement read. “The League has changed over the years but the way we run the League has not.  We cannot deny that this has been a particularly difficult year for us, dealing with a number of nonsense issues between clubs and spending far too much time dealing with unnecessary and avoidable problems. The proposed new structure will enable us to deal with matters much more quickly and effectively and importantly, will involve a greater number of our players and club officials in the running of the league” 

The Competition’s Constitution requires Management Structure changes to be voted on at the AGM in January and a Special General Meeting has been called for early November for clubs to provide feedback before taking it to the AGM and to make nominations for the new structure should it be accepted.

“The game has moved on.” said Chairman John Williams. “Managing sports clubs has become more complex and so has managing a league such as ours. We believe that by identifying and agreeing the best way forward we will in good shape for the new season in April and beyond.  The Comp has set a very high standard in all aspects of cricket in recent years, and we now need a solid infrastructure to ensure that this continues”.
