RAY DIGMAN TROPHY FINAL: NEW BRIGHTON TAKE THE TROPHY

........ winning by 2 wickets.

The final of the Digman Trophy took place on a very sunny and warm day at Leigh CC and in a very close match New Brighton beat Leigh by 2 wickets with 12 overs to spare.

New Brighton won the toss and asked Leigh to bat first and, primarily through the bowling of Ahsraf Nawab, who finished with 6 for 20 off 9 overs, Leigh were reduced to 72 for 5 after 26 overs. A lovely innings of 51 not out by Mattie McKiernan revived Leigh’s fortunes and they were all out for 158 in the last over.

Like Leigh the New Brighton innings started badly but excellent knocks from Luke Proctor, 56 not out, and Upal Fernando, 59, enabled them to reach their target of 159 with 12 overs to spare, despite good bowling spells from Steven Mullany, 4 for 45 and Mattie McKiernan also with 4 for 45.

The pair of winning runs came from a no ball as Leigh had three fielders behind square leg! A quiz question for the future .......

The Man of Match award was given by the umpires to Ashraf Nawab.

Grateful thanks are extended to Leigh for their hospitality on the day, to the scorers, Derrick Ainscough and Eddie Shiff and the umpires, Eric Hadfield and Ray Rigby
